Most of our listings come directly from the City of Calgary's business licence registry — the same municipal database businesses use to apply for and renew their operating licences. Business owners can also submit their own listings, and we independently verify every submission before it goes live.

About the Calgary Business Directory

The data behind it. The foundation of this directory is the City of Calgary's open data portal — specifically, the business licence registry that the City publishes publicly. That dataset covers every business with an active or renewing municipal licence, which is how we get to 22,000+ listings without relying on businesses to find us and sign up. The data refreshes weekly, so new businesses show up within days of being licensed, and closures drop off once their licence lapses.

One deliberate omission: home-based businesses. If a business is flagged as home-based in the Calgary open data portal, we don't import it — publishing a residential address without the owner's consent isn't something we're willing to do. If you run a business from home and want to be listed, you can create your own listing and choose whether your address is visible or hidden.

What the categories cover. Restaurants & Dining is the biggest category by a wide margin — over 6,100 listings. Health & Wellness follows at 3,300+, then Retail & Shopping (2,700+) and Home Services & Contractors (2,500+). The full breakdown spans 16 categories, from Auto & Vehicles to Wholesale & Distribution. Each category maps to the City's licence types, so a business with a "Food Service — Premises" licence lands in Restaurants & Dining, a "Contractor" licence in Home Services, and so on.

Finding businesses by neighbourhood. Every listing is tied to the Calgary community where the business operates — not a postal code, not a marketing area, but the actual community district from the City's own records. That means you can filter the entire directory down to a single neighbourhood like Beltline, Kensington, or Bowness and see exactly what's licensed to operate there. You can also explore any community's neighbourhood profile for property values, demographics, and local data beyond just businesses.

For business owners. If your business is already in the directory, you can claim your listing for free — add your phone number, website, hours, photos, and a description. If you want top placement in your category and neighbourhood, Featured listings run $9.95 per month. If you don't see your business, check for your registered business name first — many businesses operate under a trade name that differs from the name on their municipal licence. If you find it, claim that listing and update the profile rather than creating a duplicate. If your business genuinely isn't listed — whether you're home-based or newly opened — you can submit a new listing for review.
