The 2025 estimate

Between censuses, Statistics Canada estimates the city’s population once a year. Its estimate for July 1, 2025 is 1,612,834. This is an estimate, and a preliminary one that gets revised: it starts from the 2021 count, adds the people the census is known to have missed, and applies the births, deaths and moves in and out of the city since then.

The adjustment for missed residents is why the two figures differ even for the same year. For 2021 the estimate is 1,356,293, against a count of 1,306,784. Source: Statistics Canada, Table 17-10-0155-01, Population estimates, July 1, by census subdivision.

When the next count arrives

The federal census runs every five years. The 2026 Census was collected in May 2026, and Statistics Canada is scheduled to publish its first results, the population and dwelling counts, on February 10, 2027. Until then the 2021 figure is the latest count there is.

The City of Calgary ran its own door-to-door count every spring until 2019. That program was suspended in 2020 and has not resumed, which leaves the federal census as the only full count of the city.

The city and the metropolitan area

The figure above covers the city itself. The Calgary metropolitan area, which takes in Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Rocky View County and other neighbouring communities, had 1.48 million residents in the same census. For a single community, each neighbourhood profile shows its 2021 census population by age group.
