Why 2019 is still the latest Civic Census figure
The City of Calgary ran an annual door-to-door civic census from 1958 through 2019, staffed by City enumerators. The program was suspended in 2020 as part of a budget review and has not resumed. Every prior year’s citywide totals remain published on the Open Calgary portal in dataset vbfw-6stu alongside dwelling counts, ownership, and vacancy figures.
For a picture of growth between civic censuses, the Statistics Canada 2021 Census of Population reported the Calgary Census Metropolitan Area at 1.48 million — but that geography extends beyond Calgary’s municipal boundary to include Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Rocky View County, and other surrounding communities. It is not comparable line-for-line with the civic census number above.
