Founded in 1957, Bow Cycle & Sports is one of Canada's largest independently owned bicycle retailers. What started as a small sporting goods store in Bowness has grown into a Calgary institution spanning two locations and nearly seven decades of service.
Jim and Mary Sibthorpe built the original shop on a foundation of quality products and community service. Their motto — "Where the Fun Begins" — captured their belief that cycling represents joy, freedom, and togetherness. That ethos has carried through three generations of ownership. Jim Jr. and Brian Sibthorpe took the helm in 1982, and in 2005 management passed to a team of longtime employees who'd grown up within the business: John Franzky, Darrell Elliott, Kurt Christensen, Kevin Senior, Dave Leung, and Joel Sibthorpe.
In 2021, Bow Cycle expanded with an East Village location on Confluence Way, specializing in electric bikes and rentals — bringing their expertise to Calgary's urban core along the RiverWalk pathway system.
Despite their growth into one of Canada's largest bike shops, Bow Cycle retains the feel of a neighbourhood store. Their repair team brings more than 80 years of combined experience to the bench, and the BowFit Studio ensures every rider leaves on a bike that fits them properly.
